City Council Monitors Waste Sorting Implementation

Member of Commission A of the Jakarta City Council, Manuara Siahaan, is optimistic that the implementation of Governor's Instruction Number 5 of 2026 about the Waste Sorting and Processing Movement from Source can help reduce waste volume gradually.

accelerate the implementation

According to Manuara, the Jakarta Provincial Government has socialized this policy through the mayor to the ranks of district heads, urban village heads, RT/RW, and the Village Consultative Body (LMK).

The City Council, said Manuara, is also accelerating its implementation so that the waste management target set by the Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, can be achieved.

"It is currently in process, and we at the City Council are helping to accelerate the implementation so that it runs according to expectations," he said, Monday (6/15).

He explained that the City Council continues to monitor the implementation of the gubernatorial instruction through recess activities. At every opportunity, they also actively promote the importance of waste sorting to the community through neighborhood units (RT/RW), community units (LMK), and urban village officials.

However, Manuara acknowledged that several challenges remain, particularly regarding the availability of supporting facilities and infrastructure for waste sorting. Therefore, he urged the Environmental Agency (LH) to immediately map the need for waste sorting facilities in each region.

According to him, the provision of supporting facilities does not have to rely entirely on the regional budget. Business involvement and community participation can also be a solution to expedite the provision of these facilities.

He assessed that business areas, offices, and middle- to upper-class residential areas have the capacity to provide independent waste sorting facilities. Meanwhile, densely populated residential areas and slums require full government support through the regional budget.

"If this policy is implemented well, I am optimistic that waste management in Jakarta will gradually move towards the conditions we hope for," he stated.
